Bedford Township Maps

During the past several years the Bedford Township Planning Department has been in the process of developing a Geographic Information System or GIS to develop maps and data that improve the internal decision making process. Decisions regarding rezoning requests, special assessment district setup, environmental issues, and more are made easier through the use of GIS mapping. One of the other benefits of a GIS is that information can be made available to the general public for such things as street maps, zoning maps and more.

The first of the maps available to the public is an interactive street map. This map is searchable by street name. Maps of various sizes can also be printed for personal or business use. In the next few months more maps will be made available through this link on our web page.

In order to use the maps provided on our website you will need to download and install a free copy of ArcReader available from the ESRI website. ESRI or Environmental Systems Research Institute Inc., is the vendor that provides the Planning Department with the GIS software used to create maps. By clicking on the link below you will be directed to the ESRI ArcReader download website.

Once you are at the download site you will need to complete a brief registration before you can download the program file. The download file is large and may take some time to complete. Follow the instructions provided on the download page. When you are prompted to select the download options (Typical, Complete, etc.) Select the complete option. This option will include the tutorial map files as well as the complete ArcReader documentation.

It is important to note that ArcReader will only work with Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP Home and Professional operating systems. The program may run slowly  computers with older processors. The ArcReader program help function and tutorial program are extremely helpful. It is recommended that you make full use of both features.

Once you’ve installed ArcReader on your computer you will need to download the maps from the Bedford Township website by clicking on the following link GIS Maps. The downloadable map files are available as Self Extracting Zip files. Some anti-virus software will not allow you to download EXE files. If that’s the case then change the extension from .exe to .ext and save the file to your hard drive. After the download is complete locate the file and change the extension from .ext to .exe and then open it.  The self-extracting file will automatically create a folder on your computer called Bedford Maps in the root directory of drive c. Once you’ve installed the program and the Zipped map file, start ArcReader and select Open File in the menu bar. Navigate to the Bedford Maps folder and select the available maps.
